Reviving Old Florina: AI-Powered Windows into the Past

This experimental project explores how Artificial Intelligence can help reimagine the past of Florina through motion and color. Using historical black-and-white photographs from the FlorinaPast archive, AI tools were employed to colorize and gently animate old scenes of the city, bringing to life details such as moving clouds, water reflections, and the subtle motion of people and trees.

Yet, the process is far from automatic. Human expertise guided every stage: refining color choices, correcting AI inaccuracies, and ensuring historical authenticity. The goal was not only to produce a visually striking video but also to offer a faithful, emotionally resonant reconstruction of Florina’s past, where technology meets cultural memory.

The resulting short film invites viewers to experience the city as it once was, blending innovation and remembrance.

A Collaboration Between Human and Machine

AI models provided the first layer of transformation, colorizing grayscale images and animating static elements. However, historical knowledge and artistic judgment were vital to correct AI  misinterpretations, fine-tune tones, and maintain authenticity.

Effective prompt writing also played a key role, guiding AI tools to produce accurate pacing, camera movement, and atmosphere, turning data into storytelling.

Purpose and Acknowledgement

The project draws from the FlorinaPast digital archive, honoring its commitment to preserving local heritage. The video serves a dual purpose: as an educational tool for schools and cultural institutions, and as a promotional piece highlighting the timeless charm of Florina for visitors.

Through this blend of history, AI, and human curation, “Reviving Old Florina” transforms still images into living memories—an invitation to rediscover the city’s soul.
